The Astorga Manuscript (El Manuscrito de Astorga) is a seventeenth century, Spanish handbook of fly fishing techniques and fly patterns. Astorga is a town in the Asturias known since Roman times for its rivers. It was mentioned by Pliny the Elder, who knew the town as Asturia-Augusta. The Astorga Manuscript was compiled by Juan de Bergara who tells the reader that, “this (material) has been taken from and approved by documents written by anglers of great experience and is verified by Lorenzo Garcia, an angler from the neighbourhood of Astorga.” Although previous comentators have assumed that all the patterns in this work represent wet-flies, the editor argues for at least some of the patterns being dry-flies. Colour plates of flies are included.
